StarOLED is an independent online retailer based in Ontario, Canada. We sell a small, focused range of solar- and USB-powered UV insect traps that double as ambient outdoor and indoor lighting.

What we sell

Two products, in several sizes and bundle sizes:

• The outdoor solar model — a garden stake lamp that charges from sunlight during the day and runs a UV insect trap and a white landscape light at night. IP65 rated, with a dusk-to-dawn sensor.
• The indoor model — a USB-rechargeable lamp combining a low-noise UV insect trap with a soft ambient night light, designed for bedrooms, living rooms and travel.

How the lamps work — and what to expect

We would rather set accurate expectations than oversell. Both lamps use ultraviolet light to attract flying insects toward an electrically charged grid enclosed behind a protective cage.

UV light is effective at attracting a broad range of night-flying insects. It is worth knowing that mosquitoes in particular orient strongly toward exhaled carbon dioxide and body heat, so a UV trap is one tool among several rather than a complete solution for mosquitoes on its own. Independent research on UV light traps has consistently found that the majority of insects they catch are not biting species.

So: our lamps are genuinely effective UV insect traps and genuinely useful lights. We do not claim they will make any space bite-free, and you should be sceptical of any product that does. For mosquito reduction specifically, the measures with the strongest evidence behind them are eliminating standing water, using screens, and using EPA-registered repellents on skin.
